Over the weekend a family member asked if I had lost weight. My old self would have jumped at the opportunity to talk about how much weight I had lost and then eagerly answered any questions as to my diet and exercise routine to have shed said pounds. However, letting go of weight obsession has led me to true freedom.
Finally Free of Weight Obsession
Something amazing happened when I went to answer that question. My response was, “I don’t know if I’ve lost weight, I don’t use the scale.” And let me tell you, THAT was powerful. That felt better than any other point in my life where I’ve told someone the x amount of pounds I had lost. And truthfully I do not care one bit if I’ve lost weight. I FEEL amazing. I’ve been working out in the morning before work a few days a week. I eat like I have for the past few years. This looks like big portions of veggies, small portions of meat, and grains if I want them. I learned a long time ago that fast food and processed foods don’t serve me so I don’t consume them often. But I also don’t stress about eating them when I do either.
This is why I help other women break up with their scale and ditch the diets and find complete happiness free of food or weight obsession. Because it is possible to eat in a way that feels good for your body. It is possible to exercise without the goal of losing weight. Yes, it’s possible to eat “healthy” without being on a diet. It’s also possible to have a doughnut on a Sunday simply because you want it. And it’s definitely possible to not feel guilty or ashamed of doing so.
